    Complete your third-year clinical rotations before choosing a specialty.

    Investigate heart surgery at the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.


    Step3
    Take a clinical rotation in cardiovascular surgery.


    Step4
    Decide on the training pathway you wish to pursue. Pathway One requires a full residency in general surgery followed by a thoracic surgery training residency. Pathway Two requires a six-year categorical integrated residency. All training programs must be approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).


    Step5
    Participate in the residency matching program.


    Step6
    Finish your residency. Meet the operative case criteria -- for example, the minimum numbers of different types of surgical procedures you have performed.


    Step7
    Pass the American Board of Thoracic Surgery examinations
