It matters what you're using the car for, doesn't it?  In general, I would look for a single owner with evidence of regular maintenance.  Ask if the car has been in any collisions, and if so, for records of the damage and repair.  Ask what kind of mileage the car gets--especially at today's gas prices.  Check consumer reports for general historical info and any known problems on the make and model for that year.  Standard or automatic are largely a matter of personal preference.  I feel like I have more control with a manual transmission, but some people prefer automatic. Take the car for a test drive and to amechanic you trust for a thorough look under the chassis and hood.  Most mechanics will do this for a mnomical charge.  Good luck!

With this economy you should look for gas mileage. And personal appeal of course.
