I have a 12 year old Shepard. He has in the past had severe gastrointestinal issues. Because of this, His Vet did not feel comfortable giving him prescription medication for pain because of side effects (sensitive stomach)- He actually recommended Tylenol (regular strength) not to exceed 3 tabs a day. He recommended this over bufferin for the issue of the stomach. Also, he takes GLUCOSOMINE which is OTC. If I would have known about this for joints years ago I would have started the Glucosamine really.

If the aches and pains are related to arthritis, try using cosamin ds (available over the counter in most drug stores).  it is designed for humans but it works really well in canines too.  good luck
