Animal Crossing is a life simulation game, and does not have a specific aim. You take control of a character, give them a name and then move them into a new town (which you also get to name).
The town's residents are animals and you build friendships with them and settle into your new home.
You start out by travelling on a train, and a cat named Rover joins you and begins to question you. This is where you decide what gender your character is, and the name of the town you are moving to. When the cat discovers that you have hardly any money, he arranges for you to move into one of Tom Nook's homes. Tom Nook is a raccoon who owns a store in the town that you will be moving to.
When you arrive, Tom greets you, and gives you four houses to choose from. After you have made your choice, he asks you to pay him some money. When he discovers that you hardly have any, he offers to give you a part-time job at his shop to pay off the rest.
In this part of the game, you will carry out tasks for Tom and meet other residents in the town. When you have paid off the money you owe him, Tom will allow you to leave and you no longer work for him.
Although the game runs on without any particular aim, you have the option to expand your home. You must pay off the money for this, though this time you don't work for Tom, but make money by selling items to him and giving your items to other animals who offer to pay you for them. When you have fully expanded your house, a statue of your character is placed in the town square.
Animal Crossing runs in real time (according to your Gamecube clock), meaning that events, such as Halloween and New Year's Eve take place at the same time as real life.
If you keep the town nice by pulling up weeds, you will get new animals moving there (up to 15 animals can live in a town).
You can also collect NES games which you can play within the game. You may receive a NES game if you are really good friends with an animal. You can also dig them up.
Besides Tom's shop (which expands if you buy lots of items), there is a museum, police station and a tailors.
The town mayor, Tortimer, visits every so often and sometimes has tasks for you to do.
