How Do You Use A Rice Cooker?

Answer Question

5 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Using a rice cooker is very simple. The rice cooker comes along with a whistle which actually removes the excess steam out of the cooker and also tells us that the rice is ready after awhile.

In order to cook rice in it, the cooker comes along with a tray where you have to pour water and some two to three handfuls of rice or according to your need. After you have done that, put the cooker on the stove and turn on the heat. The rice will start cooking inside and after a few minutes the cooker will keep on removing the excess steam.

After you hear four to five whistles coming out of the cooker, turn off the cooker and check the condition of the rice. The rice should be ready to consume by then.

YOU PUT EQUAL WATER AND RICE TURN ON AND FORGET IT. IT PUTS ITS SELF ON WARM WHEN RICE IS DONE.

I use a 2:1 ratio of water to rice to make a fluffier rice.  Just press the button and wait.  The button pops up when rice is ready.

I grew up in Hawaii where just about everyone has rice everyday.  The brand I use (and the households I've been in) have the National brand.  You can find this or one similar in an Oriental store.  You can use these rice cookers for every kind of rice from long grain to boxed rice-a-roni.  The easiest way to make Asian white rice is to put in how ever many cups of rice you need.  Next, (this works every time and I don't know how) add enough water to where you stick your middle finger and measure the water till it comes up to the first line on that finger.  (Just set your middle finger on the top of the rice and pour water till it measures to the first line of your middle finger.)  The rice always comes out perfect.  You can always adjust the amount of water depending on how you like your rice.  For boxed rice, I just pour everything in the cooker including the amount of water the directions tell you, and just hit the cook button.  Be sure not to lift the lid until the rice is completely cooked.

This is a fail-safe method for using any rice cooker and for cooking any amount of rice.
        Wash the rice.
Then put your fingers flat on the rice while you run water into the rice cooker pan. When the rice reaches the middle of the last knuckle of the middle finger of your hand, you've enough water. Plug it in and cook.

All Asians I know of use this method of measuring and it is always accurate, for one cup of rice or 12.
