The Blue Bird was officially selected as the state bird of New York in the year 1970. This was the result of a campaign that was run in the year 1927-28 by the then President of the New York Federated Women's Clubs, Mrs Charles Cyrus Marshall. This helped to determine that the Bluebird was more popular.
Initially it was the red breasted robin or the American robin that was supposed to be the State bird. However, the actually process of adopting the bluebird as the official state bird dragged on and took another 40 years to complete. On the 18th of May in the year 1970, Governor Nelson Rockefeller finally signed a legislation that certified the bird as being the State Bird of New York.
