As an island on the edge of Manhattan, Roosevelt is a part of New York City. It's not surprising that the island is populated largely by commuters. The island spans 147 acres and is located in the middle of the East River. It is connected to Manhattan by tramway and subway. Roads and a subway connect the island to Queens. The island has its own 'city centre' with attractions and stores located on Main Street. Buildings of historic interest include the Smallpox Hospital and the Octagon Tower, formerly the site of a 19th century Mental hospital. Other attractions include the Chapel of the Good Shepherd, the Blackwell House, the western and eastern promenades and several parks. Roosevelt Island can be reached by using the B and Q subway lines. It can also be reached by tram or by a car ride over the Queensboro Bridge.
