The Great Fire of London began on 2nd September 1666 in the house of Thomas Fraynor, a baker to King Charles. Fraynor forgot to extinguish his oven before going to bed, thus beginning the greatest catastrophe in the history of the city. The embers from the oven lit some nearby firewood and the fire spread across the house. The family escaped through an upstairs window but the maid was not so lucky ~ she became the first victim of the fire.
The fire raged for three days and, once it had run its course, had claimed 13,200 houses and 87 churches, including St Paul's Cathedral. The damage totalled £10 million, roughly equivalent to £1 billion today. The fire's three-day rampage was, in fact, totally avoidable. The fire spread quickly because of the highly combustible nature of the wooden and straw-built houses. The Lord Mayor could have ordered that buildings be pulled down in order to create a fire break, but he refused to do this without the owners' consent.
