Carpenters are creative people who use their brains, hands as well as sense of style to create things out of wood. There are two types of carpenters; structural carpenters who construct buildings and detail carpenters who create furniture.

Being a carpenter you should realize that you should be physically fit, have mathematical skills and have a sense of design and creativity. It would be beneficial for you if you start taking courses such as math, mechanical drawing, architecture, general shop and basic design, while you are in high school. Also from an early age start using the tools a carpenter uses.

You should contact your student's counselor to take information regarding apprenticeship programs which will help you in getting trained in carpentry, which can last for about 4 years.

You can even start working for a small construction company which willingly provide on job training in carpentry although they will not pay much. You should also contact the carpenter's and contractor's association to know about the rights of carpenters.
Lastly, you should know that this job involves a lot of injuries and can also some times not pay well especially if there are bad weather conditions.
