We Are Re-modeling A Two Story House. The Second Story Will Only Be Used For Company. Does It Make Sense To Buy Two Hot Water Heaters, A 50 Gallon For Daily Use, And An Additional 30 Gallon Tank?

I'm thinking we would only turn on the second tank when we knew we were going to need it. (maybe 6 times a year). We have room in the basement for two tanks.

Check out tankless waterheaters. They cost a little more to install but pay for themselves within three years. With a tankless heater the water is not heated until you use it. Traditional heaters are heating the water on and off day and night every day and night. Knowing that fact also answers your question about whether it makes more sense to have two hot water heaters. If one is used solely for company then it can be turned off for most of the time, therefore saving energy.
