The official date of establishment of the Republic of San Marino is 3 September AD 301. It became a affiliate of the Council of Europe in the year 1988 and of the United Nations in 1992. It is not a member of the European Union. According to belief, San Marino was founded about AD 350 and had the excellent luck for centuries to be away from many wars and feuds on the Italian isthmus. It is considered as the oldest republic in the world. San Marino has survived, entirely intact, attacks by other independent Italian city-states, the Napoleonic Wars, the amalgamation of Italy, and most of all the two world wars.
