What Does Scroll Mean In Egypt?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The word scroll, when used in the context of the ancient Egyptian civilisation, is defined as a roll of parchment, papyrus or paper upon which words and pictures have been written, drawn or painted. Mainly scrolls are written down the entire width of the scroll. This enables the reader to read with both ends of the scroll to the right and left sides of the column.

The scrolls were the first form of books used in all the ancient civilisations of Eurasian countries. This was before the codices (the word codices is the plural form of the word codex) or books with bound pages were invented in the first century by the Romans.

Scrolls were more highly considered than codices until well into the Roman civilisation. Instead of serious literature, codices contained notes, drafts and records. Christian gospels were earlier written on codices as well. Readers thought the codices were didactic handbooks.
