I Have Had A Bad Fall Off A Horse. How Can I Get My Confidence Back?

Hi guys. I had an accident where a horse bolted and I was thrown. I asked the horse to canter and he took off into a full gallop. We were in a dressage arena. He took a corner too fast and I went flying. I got back on a horse but now I'm terrified of cantering. Please can somebody help?

My dad had a terrible accident on his horse almost 8 years ago. He at full gallop when the horse went into a hole. Dad flew over the front and landed on his face almost breaking his neck, after several months of chiropractic care he got right back on and started slow in the round pen and was back to riding in no time. Just realize that your horse is going to feel your reluctance and fear, so start off slow and work your way up.

With any bad experience, confidence in that field is affected. Some people say time is a healer but I believe grabbing the bull by the horns and going straight at it again is the fastest way. I'm not saying go all out, take it slow to begin with and just practice what you are comfortable with. Slowly your confidence will grow and you will want to see if you can canter the same again. You will be able to, no doubt but initially your nerves will get in the way. If they are excessive try a hot drink beforehand to relieve tension. The best thing about this whole ordeal is that once you have overcome this fear, you will heal stronger with more confidence. So basically to start the ball rolling, just take it one step at a time. Hope this helps
