The Book Thief, by Marcus Zusak, tells about the life of a young girl in Nazi Germany. The interesting twist is that the story is narrated by death. Hard concept to imagine at times, but it certainly a unique method of telling a tale.
At times Mr. Zusak's style of writing can become a bit confusing, leaving you only one choice- page backward and clear up any uncertainties that you have. This is not a hard task and you will benefit from spending the time on this backward search for facts.
The story is long-550 pages- but the story beats along and the length becomes insignificant. Some of the most clever writing can be found within these pages. Pay close attention to the 13 pages created especially for the book thief by a Jewish friend. If there were an Academy Award for inventiveness within a novel, this piece would surely emerge the winner!
