Why Is The Sleeping Beauty Under A Spell?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In the version of this story collected by Perrault, several fairies are invited to the christening of a baby princess. The gifts they give her are qualities: beauty, wisdom, a fine singing voice and so on. However, her parents forgot to invite one very malicious fairy. This hag suddenly appears after the gift-giving and, furious at being neglected, announces her own gift: when the princess is fifteen, she will prick her finger on a spinning-wheel and die. The general panic is slightly calmed by one fairy, who manages to lighten the curse, though she can't lift it: the princess will not die, but she and all around her will sleep for a hundred years.
The king immediately bans all spinning equipment from the palace. Nevertheless, on her  fifteenth birthday, his daughter (called Aurora in many versions) does find a spinning-wheel in the attic, and is lured by the evil fairy to touch it . She pricks her finger, the whole household falls into a trance, and there they stay until, 100 years later, a prince comes and kisses her awake.
