Why Does This Country With So Many Diverse People Have So Much Racism And Prejudices?

It takes a lot of growing up,it is like your children some get it and others don't they will have it or do it their way,it is difficult to purge one of something that is embeded....

The basis of intolerance and prejudice has its roots in differences - differences in experience and worldview to which we cannot or wish not to relate.  These include values, which are deeply held personal beliefs that guide our actions, and when we perceive that others' are counter to our own, we reject them or fear them, and often project that personal rejection to those we perceive as being similar.  An additional factor in intolerance and prejudice is the perception of (or the reality of) having been harmed by someone, or a "group" of "someones" holding similar beliefs that are counter to our own, or acting in ways that seem similar.  Human brains have a natural tendency to categorize and group people in order to try to make sense of the world.  Our brain does this nearly automatically.  For example, we encounter a mugger on the street who looks and acts a certain way-- one that brings us either threat or harm.  Our brains automatically categorize the people who resemble this mugger (who represent danger to us) in terms of many characteristics - mannerisms, appearance, actions, etc.  The next time we encounter a person whose characteristics seem similar enough, our reaction is to classify that person similarly, even if they present to no imminent threat.  Our brain has established a belief based on our experience or "knowledge".   On a broader scale, we see the same principle at work as regards beliefs we form around  social or cultural differences.  We may not understand or agree with the actions or values of a group based on our own experience or "learning".  Those values or actions seem confusing, and we may perceive them as not only counter to our own deeply held value system, but also potentially harmful in some way.  When we see another person in the same social or cultural group who shares enough of these challenging similarities, we form a belief system that tends to categorize these people in the same way, even though their actions, beliefs and tendencies might actually not be the same.  The formation of prejudices we hold is based in generalizations like that, which can be passed down from generation to generation.  I hope this helps.

Well lack of respect for others, lack of respect for ones self, ignorance... To be honest few can really trace back their family tree and not find something they don't like. One can only truly be offended if they think deep down someone else's opinion of them is right.

It is really sad that there is so much racism and pred. In this country. Maybe someday we will overcome.
