Many women can begin to experience difference in menstrual periods during peri-menopause--the time before actual menopause--which can be up to 15 years prior to actual menopause. This may one reason your periods have become irregular, but since there are a variety of reasons this could occur (uterine fibroids, hormonal fluctuation, stress, etc.,) it is best is you make an appointment with your GYN or doctor and explain the irregularities. Often an exam will rule out other things, and give you peace of mind. Good luck.
