There are number of categories under which a person becomes a citizen of the Republic of Ireland. Citizenship is available by Birth, Citizenship by Marriage and Citizenship by Naturalization. In each of these categories further provisions are listed as to eligibility of a person who can or cannot become a citizen of Ireland.
Citizenship is awarded by birth to individuals who have both their parents as Irish citizens and any one of the parents who have been residing in the United States for more that three years. A person marrying an Irish person can also become eligible to become an Irish citizen. Refugees can apply for Irish Citizenship through the naturalization process after having stayed in Ireland for over three years or five years if awarded leave of stay.
