The book is of the fantasy genre and is written in Pratchett's well-known comic style. Characters from the book include Rincewind (the book's protagonist),Twoflower, and The Luggage.

The book's original publisher was Colin Smythe, and it came 93rd in the Big Read.

The Colour of Magic was followed by The Light Fantastic, which was the second novel in the Discworld series and published in 1986. The book continues the adventures of Rincewind, Twoflower and the Luggage.

The plot of The Colour of Magic was used for a computer game.
