For many women there is a very long road to diagnosis. Girls from as young as thirteen are being diagnosed with women in their forties. The most common age to be diagnosed is when you are in your early twenties. This is thought to be because the women by this time knows there must be something truly wrong to suffer so much discomfort and they are not brushed off as quickly as girls with 'period pains.'
The first step is always speaking to your doctor. Do not tone down the symptoms you are feeling. A common misdiagnosis is IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) because of the effect it has on the bowels for a lot of women.
You may be sent for internal examinations, blood tests and ultrasound scans but it is important to note that these may NOT show up endometriosis.
The only way to truly diagnose Endometriosis is by having a laparoscopy performed by a surgeon.
