Can You Give Me Details On American Pronunciation?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

American pronunciation is different from UK English, that's for sure.

One of the main differences is the pronunciation of the letter 'u' and 'ou'.

Take the word, duty. In UK speak, it is pronounced dew-ty while the American version renders this word as dooty. Of  course, this is a generalisation and there are exceptions.

Regarding the 'ou' sound, take, for example, the word, router, the device by which you are more than likely using to connect to the internet. In UK pronunciation, it is called a root-er. In American, this piece of hardware is pronounced as rout-er as in the word rout, meaning a disorderly flight after a battle.

A good site to learn more about American pronunciation is on Eva Easton's web site at evaeaston.com.

Also good is the American English Pronunciation site which contains helpful MP3 tracks to hear how words should sound.
