The current state of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is they are bankrupt. They need major financial assistance from somewhere and most likely it will be the US Government. The stock price of both has tanked and it appears that the common stock holders will loose all of their investment in these companies even with the bail-out and if the bail-out happens the preferred share holders may not be in much better shape. If these two companies are not given the assistance they need this country may very well see the total collapse of the real estate market and even worse. These companies were the main stay of peoples ability to purchase homes and if they go under the depression of the 1920's may not look all that bad.
