    Most registry cleaners will provide a free evaluation version of their software. These will be limited in some way. If you are determined to manually edit, (btw. Not recommended) , find one that will give you a list of the errors. At least you will have a starting point. Make sure you backup the registry before editing it. Also make sure you have a windows bootable disk. If you mess up the registry your system might not boot from the hard drive. The program to use is regedit.exe. Much of the garbage in the registry is from programs that have been uninstalled but did not remove registry entries during the uninstall process. A list of installed programs will also provide some clues as to what not to delete. Good Luck. Here are some references that might help:
