The 1994 film "A Simple Twist of Fate" is a modern version of Eliot's 1861 novel "Silas Marner." Silas is a weaver, embittered by a false accusation of theft. He shuns all human contact and gives all his affection to his hoard of gold. This is then stolen by Dunstan Cass, the Squire's son, who runs away. Silas obsessively searches for his gold; one day, seeing something gleaming on the ground, he thinks he has found it. But the "gold" is in fact the bright hair of Eppie, a baby girl whose mother, secretly married to Dunstan's elder brother, died while carrying her to her father's home. Not knowing who Eppie is, Silas reluctantly adopts her. Soon she becomes far more precious to him than the lost gold, which is only found years later when Dunstan's dead body is discovered. Eppie's father Godfrey Cass is moved by this to admit his paternity and offer to adopt her, but Eppie, now in her teens, refuses to leave Silas.
