Mild Emphysema. What Can I Do About It?

Answer Question

4 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Definitely avoid smoking. Stay away from people and places where theres smoke. Emphysema is not revesable. Once you develop it you have it for the rest of your life, and the duration of that like depends on you and your willingness to take care of your lungs. Follow your doctors instructions to the letter. If you don't, and the Emphysema gets worse, and if you ever need any surgery for anything, you will not be able to have that surgery because of the health of your lungs. My fateher died because of a small blockage in his heart that was completely curable with surgery but couldn't have the surgery because he had Emphysema and didn't quit smoking. He never saw his grand children.

You can do deep lung breathing several times a day to help in making sure that your lungs stay as open as you can keep them. If the doctor prescribed you an inhaler, please use it, and keep one on you all the time. Of course quit smoking, I am trying, and it isn't easy! Avoid triggers that will cause you to want to smoke, and take up walking, this is excellent for your lungs. All of this can help in keeping the total effects of the emphysema at bay. Hope this helps, good luck to you.

Quit smoking.  Go to a doctor, get an inhaler.
