Mount Pelee is also known as Montagne Pelee , which means Bald Mountain. It has an active volcano. This mountain is at the north end of the Departement of Martinique. This French overseas Departement is found in the Caribbean. The Caribbean contains the Caribbean Sea, coasts around America and its islands. Department of Martinique is an island of French West Indies and covers an area of 1128 sq Km. Mt Pelee is positioned at 14.49' N latitude and 61.10' W longitude.
It is categorised as a stratovolcano. The volcanic cone of Mt Pelee holds layers of hardened lava and volcanic ash. Mt Pelee last erupted in 1902 and was the worst of volcanic eruptions of 20th century. Saint-Pierre was ruined by the eruption and twenty-six thousand to thirty-six thousand deaths occurred.
