What Should I Know About The Turbo In My Classic Saab 900 And How Can I Prolong Its Life?

Answer Question

The greatest contributions to turbo TLC is gentle, careful treatment. At the end of every journey, let the engine idle for about 20 to 30 seconds before switching off. Doing this allows the turbo unit to cool down.

Also, do not rev the engine immediately before switching off, only do so while the engine is idling. The reason for this is to ensure that the turbo compressor is not run unnecessarily without adequate oil pressure.

It is also advisable when starting never to accelerate at full throttle before the engine is up to normal working temperature.

In very cold weather, if your Saab 900 Turbo should stall shortly after having been started, fully depress and hold the accelerator and turn the engine over on the starter motor to prevent the engine from becoming flooded. It should then start as normal.

Keep an eye, too, on the turbo pressure gauge. Should the needle repeatedly enter the red zone, a loss of engine power may be experienced because the safety cut out system has kicked in to limit the charging pressure. If this happens, take the car to a Saab garage ASAP.
