When Was The Municipality Of Brussels Built?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

Brussels was established in 979 A.D., although there is mention of the area from as early as 695 A.D., when it is believed that a chapel was built on these grounds. Brussels, however, remained a relatively small settlement, although it did serve as a place to stop and rest for people travelling between Bruges and Ghent.

By circa 1184, Brussels' population stood at approximately 30,000 and as the city grew in size and importance new fortifications and walls were built during the 14th century. In the fifteenth century, Brussels was raised in status and served as the capital of the Low Countries.

According to the most recent census data, the current population of Brussels, including all neighbouring suburbs, stands at over 1.9 million. Brussels is also home to most institutions of the European Union and the EU bureaucracy.

The population of Brussels is a vibrant, linguistic mix of French and Dutch. Both languages are widely used in the city and the name "Brussels" is derived from a combination of Dutch words, meaning "home in the marsh."
