The term Bakelite checkers refers to a brand of backgammon checkers that were created at the beginning of the nineteenth century. The Bakelite Company pioneered a way thermosetting a plastic material under high temperatures so that it could keep its shape. It was originally used for jewellery and other forms of ornamentation, but the weighted feel and strength of the product made it an ideal material for making attractive game playing pieces.
Backgammon was the most popular board game at the start of the nineteenth century and so the Bakelite Company started their production of playing pieces with the backgammon game. The idea was and continues to be successful. Although other types of plastic backgammon checkers can be bought, the Bakelite checkers are considered by the discerning backgammon player to be the best because of their distinctive feel during handling. They are not in production now, however, and so have to be bought in vintage condition.
