    To cognitive psychologist, the events that cause behavior consist of function of the human brain that occurs in response to environmental effects. There explanations involve characteristics of inferred mental processes such as imagery, attention, a mechanism of language.

    Most of them do not study physiological mechanisms, but recently some have begun collaborating with neurologists and other professionals involve in brain scanning. The study of biology of cognition has been greatly aided by the development of harmless brain scanning method that permit us to measure the activity of various parts of the human brain. Cognitive psychologists almost exclusively study humans, although some of them have begun to study animal cognition as well.

    The primary contribution of cognitive psychology to the study of drug addiction has bee the development of therapeutic methods that have prove themselves useful in the treatment of addictive behaviours. Cognitive behaviour therapists have discover the importance of teaching people coping strategies that enable them to better resists the temptation of addictive drugs.
