Fortran and Cobol are two very different programming languages. They both go back a long way (back to the 1960's I believe) and are typically used for batch processing (ie, doing large computing tasks on a schedule), but that is where the similarity ends. Fortran is powerful at numerical tasks, and Cobol is used for writing business-oriented tasks.
