Once a chick is hatched it needs constant heat (a light) until it starts to feather out. A chick can't hold body heat in until it gets its feathers. I have a brooder box with a light in it and I can remove the chicks to clean it out and they have room to run and play and eat and drink and can always go to the light if they get cold.
