Answer Question

A ballistic missile is a sub-orbital rocket that is designed to deliver an explosive warhead to a specific target.  There are three parts to the missiles flight: a powered launch, free flight (whilst in space) and atmospheric re-entry free fall flight to its target.

The first ballistic missiles were used by Nazi war machine in Germany during the Second World War.  Germany launched over three thousand ballistic missiles during the later years of the war.

Currently, ballistic missiles can be fired from aircraft, submarines, mobile launchers and launch sites.

There are several types of missile:

Short Range Ballistic Missile (SRBM) - 1,100km
Medium Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) - up to 2750km
Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (LRBM) -5,550km
Intercontinental Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) 5,550+

The larger range missiles were developed to deliver a nuclear payload to an enemy target, usually a city or military base.  The USA, France, Russian Federation, Pakistan and China are amongst the countries that own ballistic weapons of mass destruction.
