What Is NATO?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

NATO is the abbreviation for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. It is a military alliance of twenty six countries who have agreed to help each other in case of an attack from a foreign power. It is a kind of mutual protection pact, however that term is archaic. NATO was founded in 1949 a little after the end of the Second World War. The members of NATO include Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, United Kingdom, United States, Greece, Turkey, Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungry, Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

NATO was primarily geared to deal with the eventuality of war with the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. Over the years NATO has had its share of problems with France withdrawing from the military front and remaining a part of the political façade only.
