Gymnastics began in ancient Greece as a formalized way for athletes  to train their body for participation on many sports.  It was also a social outlet for Greek men who participated in gymnastics in conjunction with other activities, such as massage.  The connection and inter-relation of the body and mind (pyscho-soma) was an important Greek philosphers such as Plato, who promoted gymnastics as an art-form such as sculture, music and dance.  Gymnastics is still an ideal way of developing the body-mind connection to enhance fitness, health and well-being.
