Lake Challa is situated in the equatorial region of East Africa. The total area of Lake Challa is around five squares kilometres, it is ninety seven meters deep and is a fresh water lake. It is on a height of 880 meters and is placed on the south-east slope of Mount Kilamanjaro. The lake does not have any inflow or outflow of water; it gets it supply of water from the precipitation which takes place on the lakes surface.

In the year 2005 a good sediment core which had good fossil diatom preservation was recovered from this area. Extensive study on this fossil revealed that it was approximately more than hundred years old.

These fossils also helped archaeologist and other researchers determine the various climate driven changes that take place in Mount Kilimanjaro.
