The UK shipbuilding industry has declined heavily, but the city which historically was most strongly asociated with shipbuilding is Newcastle Upon Tyne, county town of Northumberland in North-east England. Newcastle was even better known for coalmining, but both these industries flourished there (as well as in the North-east generally) as early as the 13th century.
Newcastle continued to supply ships for both military and civil use until the late 20th century. Its boom periods have tended to be in wartime, though; production was very high in both the First and Second World wars, with a severe slump in between.
After WW2, the industry gradually declined, largely due to competition from overseas; in some neighbouring cities such as Sunderland, all the shipyards eventually closed down. In Newcastle, however, there has recently been a revival, mainly because of a contract to build aircraft carriers for the Ministry of Defence.
