When Did The New York Dolls Form?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The New York Dolls formed in 1971 in New York City, US; the original members of the band were David Johansen who was the lead vocalist, Johnny Thunders and Rick Rivets who were the guitarists, Arthur Kane who was the bassist and Billy Murcia who was the drummer. Sylvain Sylvain replaced Rivets while Jerry Nolan became the drummer after the accidental death of Billy Murcia.

The Dolls were pioneers in several ways; their unique style of playing, their dress sense which featured cross-dressing as well as their innovation in their music which later developed in to the punk rock genre which was immensely popular throughout the seventies. The band's first two albums New York Dolls (1973) and Too Much Too Soon (1974) were instant hits and are still considered to be the best examples of the protopunk genre. Some of the groups that influenced the Dolls were the Rolling Stones and The Stooges and British musician David Bowie.
