The Easter Rising took place in 1916 in Ireland. The purpose of the Rising was to overthrow Britsh rule in Ireland.

Although WWW1 acted as the catalyst for the Rising, the seeds had been sown over 50 years earlier, with the formation of the Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) in 1858 just after the end of the Great Famine of 1845-50.

The roots of rebellion went back to the French Revolution and the Rebellion of the American colonies against British rule. The Society of United Irishmen under Wolf Tone many years previously also inscpired the Rising.
The Military Council of the IRB was led by Eamonn Ceannt, Tom Clarke, Sean MacDermott , Thomas MacDonagh ,Patrick Pearce and Joseph Plunkett.
They formed an alliance with the leader of Irish citizens Army, James Connelly with hte hope of establishing a worker's republic.

The advent of WWW1 had triggered surface mixed feelings about national identity in Ireland.
