What Is Cross-literacy?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Cross-literacy means you teach a certain subject but make the lesson cross into other subject matter.  For example, if you are from the book "Adrift" about a man who is lost at sea for 80+ days in a life raft, you would include much more than just reading.  You could do mapping of the course his raft took.  Perhaps you would study ocean currents and wind direction, speed.  He encountered many animals living in the sea or on the sea.  This would provide many opportunities for study.  He made a small stove with a can he had on the raft.  This would lead to a hands on project. This list could go on forever.  A great creative writing project would follow.  You have crossed from reading/writing into math, science, geography.  You could bring in art, history of boats, sea chanties, etc.
