Vancouver Island is the largest island of the Pacific coast of North America. It is situated in south western British Columbia. Vancouver is ruled under the Canadian government.

The total territory of the Vancouver Island is estimated around 31,285 square kilometres. The Island has some peaks of more than 2100 meters. It also has several fine harbours.

Victoria is the main city of the Island. The place was actually populated by coastal Indians for several millennia. After the English and Spanish explorers visited the area the coastal Indians lost their kingdom. In the year of 1792, George Vancouver investigated and surveyed the whole territory and the total area was named by him. The Island was held by Hudson's Bay Co. In the year of 1849 it became a British Crown colony. The area was united as the British Columbia in the year of 1866.

Fishing, lumbering, tourism and agriculture are the main economic activities of the territory. According to the census report of the year of 2001, the population was estimated around 705,000.
