Check the linkage first, it is usually easy to repair yourself and you can find good diagrams online at chat forums, that will help you know how. i had the plastic ball on the end of the cable fall off and it did the same thing, i just wauded up some JB weld on the tip of the cable and it worked fine until i sold the car.
