    The dictionary definition of "limbo" is the abode of souls barred from heaven through no fault of their own. It generaly refers to unbaptised infants.
    I'm not sure "limbo" and "alternate reality" or "another dimension" are synonymous -- but I know where you are going.
    Other tems for the concept you are seeking may be "on a different plane" or "in a different space" or "in his own world" or "a world beyond our comprehension [imagining]."
