Once two people are married in the eyes of the LAW (e.g. Legally married), they have very specific rights allotted to them as a married couple. Insurance and death benefits, the ability to see your partner in a hospital, or even the ability make important medical decisions for your spouse (if they are unconscious or disabled in some way) are all things which married couples get in terms of given rights. These are things which you can not get (or are very hard to get) if you are just "dating" or "living together".
