How Is New Year's Eve Celebrated In Britain?

Answer Question

A lot of people invite their friends for an evening party, where the guests may arrive later than they would for an ordinary dinner party (probably after 8.) They will usually have a simple meal and something traditional to drink like punch or mulled wine. People dance or play games as they would at any other party. Fancy dress is very popular on New Year's Eve, so it might be a costume party. Just before midnight, everyone has a glass of champagne. If there is no loud striking clock within hearing, people usually turn on the TV or radio so they can hear Big Ben strike midnight. As the clock strikes 12, everybody links arms and sings the old song by Robert Burns "Auld Lang Syne." After that, it's usual to kiss the person next to you – or everyone else if you feel like it.

If you are having a "street celebration," the end is similar but you spend the evening wandering around the town centre, visiting pubs and/or friends' houses. There may be fireworks too. You sing Auld Lang Syne around the town hall clock. Some cities have very elaborate celebrations – the Scottish Hogmanay is world famous, and London's Trafalgar Square is also a popular destination.
