Eoin Colfer is an author, best known for writing the successful Artemis Fowl series.
Early life
Eoin Colfer was born in 1965, in Wexford, Ireland. He was educated at Dublin University and worked as a primary school teacher after graduating. He began work as a full-time writer after the first Artemis Fowl book was published in 2001.
Before the Artemis Fowl series came along, Colfer had some success with a children’s book entitled "Benny and Omar". "Benny and Omar" was published in 1998 and in 1999, a sequel entitled "Benny and Babe" followed.
Artemis Fowl
The Artemis Fowl series helped Colfer to become a success worldwide. The series, which is a collection of fantasy books aimed at young adults, began in 2001. The first in the series is "Artemis Fowl". The book was a success, receiving a string of awards and very positive responses from critics and readers.
The second book in the series, "Artemis Fowl: The Arctic Incident", was published in 2002. Like the first instalment, the second book was a success, receiving good reviews and plenty of wards.
The third book, "Artemis Fowl: The Eternity Code" followed in 2003. This instalment was also well received.
The fourth book in the series is "Artemis Fowl: The Opal Deception". Reviews for this instalment were mixed.
The fifth instalment, "Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony", was published in 2006. This, reviews were mainly positive.
The sixth instalment is "Artemis Fowl: The Time Paradox". This instalment was published in 2008 and it is unclear as to whether or not it is the final book in the series. Colfer has not ruled out a seventh book but has stated that if there was to be another book, then fans will have to wait a few years. The sixth book received very positive reviews and many awards.
In addition to the series, there are also graphic novel adaptations of "Artemis Fowl" and "The Arctic Incident". These novels contain coloured pictures and can be purchased from the Artemis Fowl website.
Colfer has also published a companion book, which was published in 2004. "The Artemis Fowl Files" contained two short stories that focused on two characters from the series. One of the short stories is entitled "Artemis Fowl: The Seventh Dwarf", which was also written for "World Book Day" as well as being included in the companion book. The companion book also contains a selection of puzzles and pieces of information about the characters.
Adaptations
A film adaptation of the first Artemis Fowl novel is currently in the works, but no actors have been cast yet and no release date has been given.
Other adaptations for Colfer’s works include a television adaptation for "Half Moon Investigations", "Half Moon Investigations" was published in 2006 and is a mystery novel. The novel has been adapted into a children’s comedy crime drama by the BBC and first began airing in January 2009. There will be a total of thirteen episodes for the series, each one lasting thirty minutes. The series has been received well by critics and viewers.
