Most people who study diseases are called researchers, as they are often trying to find a cure, they collect data and compare studies etc...often hired by pharmaceutical companies or work for agencies such as University studies, or as in Cancer research.  Microbiologists also a term for a more precise study of germs and interactions and causes etc.
