Myalgic encephalopathy, or ME as it is commonly known, is a condition that is related to chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), post-viral fatigue syndrome (PVFS) and chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS). The onset of ME can be linked to a viral infection in most cases, but can also occur if the patient has undergone an operation or met with an accident. Some people, however, do experience a rather slow and insidious onset. Apart from the symptoms of CFS, ME sufferers might also experience gastric disturbances.
The recovery is unpredictable and differs from person to person. In some cases, it may be partial and follow a course of slow recovery and relapse, whereas others may take a few months or years to recover. People with ME find it difficult to work, study or find employment, as they are advised to take complete bed rest until they recover.
