What Are The Prospects For A Person With Downs Syndrome To Be Able To Live Independently?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It partly depends how independent you want them to be.

Most people with Downs can live at least semi-independently, but they will tend to need extra education on how to do so.  This would cover practical things like doing the laundry, house-cleaning, shopping, cooking and aspects of personal hygiene.  Once taught the right skills, many if not most people with Downs can at least function in a group home environment (not necessarily at home with their family).

Holding down a job is tougher, but often still possible.  Voluntary work may be easier to get than a paid job.  At the moment, only about 17% of people with a learning disability are in paid employment.

It's estimated that 60-70% of people with Downs syndrome are able to achieve reasonable literacy levels (be able to read) by early adulthood. Early tuition and intervention can really help a lot towards achieving this goal.

Numeracy and fine or gross motor skills tend to be weaker, relatively, than literacy skills in people with Downs.
