A man known as Jack London who was a celebrated American author was actually called John Griffith London and was also an oyster pirate on a fishing patrol. Born on January 12th in 1876, John joined seamen on a sailing vessel and took part in the Klondike gold rush of 1897 which tramped through the United States and Canada.
Taking advantage of all his various experiences, he wrote a short book of stories in 1900 about the Far North, called The Son of the Wold. However, it was another book that John wrote called the Call of the Wind that made him a best-selling author. The book was published in 1903 and this was followed by The Sea Wolf in 1904 and White Fang in 1907, all very popular books. In 1905 John was also a war reporter, covering the Russo-Japanese War.
He was also responsible for non-fiction books such as The War of the Classes. John was only 40 when he died on November 22nd in 1916.
